これは、私たち自身の永遠の、内部的なビッグマック指数なのです。他の職業と同等になるには、そう、日本のような国が他の国と同等になろうとするのと同じように、困難で微妙なものになるのでしょう。傲慢になる必要はありませんが、自分たちの仕事、自分たちが世界に提供している価値について自覚し、無力感という自己憐憫を捨てなければならないのです。そうでなければ、私たちの職業は新しい才能を惹きつけることができず、一種の頭脳流出が起こってしまうでしょう。そのためには、ビックマック指数を変えなければならないのです。

But what does that say about our profession in general? What does that say about our country? Moreover, what does that say about our civilization as a whole? Remember that, in the US, the highest paid recent college graduates from computer engineering programs can earn up to $74,000 annually? At $44,409, average salary for an entry level architect, the discrepancy is 60%. This is our own eternal, internal Big Mac Index. The only way we can reach parity with other professions is going to be as challenging and tenuous as, yes, a country like Japan attempting to reach parity with other nations. No need for hubris, certainly, but we have to be mindful of what we do, of the value we provide the world, and shed the self-pitying sense of impotence. Or else our profession will not attract new talents, and hence undergo a kind of brain-drain. Let’s change our Big Mac Index.

What the egosphere explicates is the role of architecture today, fraught between being material evidence of lifestyles that are not yet synonymous with manufactured desires, and attempting to reconcile the various conditions of living in a reflexive modernity, with individuals and households in search of themselves in a politics of identity. Itself a time capsule of this vision of urban life, the Nakagin Capsule Tower encapsulated this struggle – albeit briefly, but brilliantly.

エゴースフェアは、こんにちの建築の役割を示している。それは、2つの狭間にある。未だ実現されていない欲望を充たすライフスタイルの物的証拠となることと、個人の政治学に自らと家庭とを探し求め鏡像の近代を生きる諸条件を調和させようとすることのあいだだ。《中銀カプセルタワー》は、このような都市生活のビジョンをタイムカプセルに収め、短期間ではあるが、見事にこの葛藤を結晶化したのである。

不気味なほど現実に迫ってくる純粋な真意や表現、すなわち「深層風景（Receded Scapes）」は、目に見えないけれど極めてリアルな地形です。深層は直接的な物理性を持たないため、最も単純なレベルでは、私たちから、あるいは私たちの知覚可能な範囲から遠ざかるだけです。例えば、東京の地価を例にとると、純粋な真意や表現が現実に重くのしかかる、無数の深層のひとつであることがわかります。

Receded Scapes are invisible yet quite real topographies. Receded Scapes only recede from us, or our sphere of accessible perception rather, at the simplest level with their inherent lack of direct physicality. Take, for example, the land value in Tokyo as the one of myriad Receded Scapes of pure contents and expressions that profoundly impose on reality.

Here, the seven hills within the ancient bounds of Servian Wall have been analogized to seven plateaus (Ueno, Hongo, Koishikawa-Mejiro, Ushigome, Yotsuya-Kojimachi, Asaksaka-Azabu, and Shiba-Shirogane) within a feudal bondage of the spiraling moat… Now with Covid-19, there has been an “exodus” of whitecollar elites that can afford to have a dual-base lifestyle… Soon, Tokyo may well have seven mountains within! At another level, there are invisible yet quite real topographies; the receded scapes. Pure contents and expressions of the digital era that impose on reality in uncanny ways.

ローマの7つの丘と東京の台地とが併置されています。古代ローマのセルウィウス城壁内にある7つの丘が、7つの台地へと類推され、渦巻く総構えの中にあります… そして新型コロナウィルスをきっかけに、仕事の都合で短期間滞在する東京の拠点と、緑豊かな自然に囲まれた安定した自宅の二拠点生活を送るホワイトカラー・エリートが地方へ「流出」しています… やがて東京に7つもの「山」ができるかもしれません。もうひとつのレベルでは、目に見えないけれども実にリアルな地形、つまり深層の風景が存在します。デジタル時代の純粋なコンテンツ(内容)と表現が、不気味なまでに現実に迫っています。

Bureau is thrilled to announce that its founder, Kaz, will be the Space Design Jury President at #dandad22 in a year when celebrating the power of creativity is as important as ever. As he looks ahead to judging the spatial design category at D&AD Awards 2022, Kaz traces the purpose of design from the Industrial Revolution to today, where he sees parallels with society’s yearning for better design informed by collectivism.

It was 7 years ago on this fateful month that “bureau0-1”, as a sole proprietor design practice, excitedly yet anxiously began its exploration into an uncharted territory of independence. Another parallel event for us is that Bureau 0-1 will soon enter its 5th year as an incorporated entity. While we constantly strive to set our visions towards the future, November inevitably affords us a moment for introspection.

However, to be honest in my opinion, we have yet to accomplish anything. This observation serves as an instigation for both an intense reflection and fiery motivation. In this light, may this moment begin a process to engender a promise from us in coming years to think big, act vigorously, and exact results.

今から7年前のこの月、“bureau0-1”は個人事業のデザイン事務所として、ワクワクしながらも不安な気持ちで独立という未知の領域に踏み出しました。加えて、Bureau0-1は法人化してまもなく5年目を迎えようとしています。そういうわけで、我々は常に未来に向けてのビジョンを描いていますが、霜月頃になると必然的に内省的な時間が訪れるのです。

しかし、正直なところ、我々はまだ何も成し遂げていないのではないでしょうか。このことは、客観的な省察と燃えるようなモチベーションのきっかけとなっています。この瞬間が、これからの数年間で、多種多様なことを考え、精力的に行動し、着実に結果を出すことを我々に課せるためのプロセスの始まりとなりますように。

Guided by Maki’s vision, Daikanyama has developed from a sleepy, semi-rural enclave into a neighborhood with a mature spatial and architectural character, but we cannot preclude the possibility of further change. To treat the area as a relic would be to ignore the philosophy of metabolic growth that undergirds its design. The challenge ahead for Daikanyama will be to reconcile its identity with the vicissitudes of real estate speculation, changing tastes, and time.

代官山は槇の構想によって、眠ったような半端な田舎町から、成熟した空間と建築物を持つ街へと発展してきたが、今後も変化する可能性を排除することはできない。このエリアを遺物のように扱うことは、デザインの根底にある新陳代謝の哲学を無視することになる。これからの代官山は、不動産投機や嗜好の変化、そして時代の流れの中で、いかにアイデンティティを確立していくかが問われているのである。

「373,490人。これは2019年4月時点における日本の一級建築士登録者数だ。同年、フランス建築家協会に登録されているアーキテクトの数は29,034人。日本の国土面積はフランスの7割程度だが、人口はおよそ倍を数える。一方で先述の数字をもとに計算すると、建築家の数は日本がフランスの13倍弱となる... 日本は非常に多くの建築家を抱える国であることがわかる。」

孤立した個別の限定的な地域のスケールではなく、より大きな面として問題を理解し、概念化しなければなりません。まずは現代の封建政治的な仮面を被った幾重なる制約を剥がし、いくつかの越境を試みることを厭わないことが重要です。マスタープラン、リージョナルデザイン、どのような呼び方であれ、私を含め日本の建築家は街や地方を面的な広域といったより大きな空間の課題として捉えて取り組み始めるべきでしょう。

We must understand and conceptualize the issues not at an isolated, discrete, highly localized scale, but as a larger surface. First, by peeling off the multilayered constraints of contemporary fiefdoms, masks of perceived polity, and willingness to step on some boundaries. Masterplanning, regional design, whatever the preferred nomenclature, architects in Japan ought to begin engaging with a larger territorial strategy.
