Now that the May Fever (Japanese concept of "spring fatigue") has subsided, it's time to restart the newsletter series. A soul-searching pilgrimage was made to Ise Shrine in May and here are some thoughts from that journey.

さて、五月病もおさまったところですし、ニュースレターを再開できる次第と相成りました。
5月に伊勢参りに行ってきました。その旅を通して得た考察から再開できれば幸いです。

What becomes imperative, then, is to have a compass within ourselves. Not just a moral compass that guides us through the tempest storms of our lives. Personally, I have come to identify myself with a kind of compass that is used for drafting. It is the kind that allows one to manifest various dividuals in each person. One axis is thoroughly grounded in architecture, but as a scatterbrain interested in diverse subjects and yearning to accomplish many things in life, my other axis or leg is always hopping from one role or field to another.

日々の雑務や多趣味で自分を見失わないために必要なのは、自分自身の中にコンパスを持つことです。人生の荒波を乗り越えていくための羅針盤(方角的コンパス)だけではありません。私は、製図で円を描く時に用いるコンパス(領域的コンパス)のようなものに自分を照らし合わせるようになりました。それは、人の中にあるさまざまな分人的な素質を顕在化させるようなものだと考えています。一本の軸はアーキテクチャーに根ざしてはいますが、様々なことに興味を持ち、他にもあれもやってみたいこれもやってみたいと思う散漫気味な性格なので、もう一本の軸足は、常に他の役割や分野をぴょんぴょん飛び回っています。

本年も皆様のご支援とご協力を賜り、厚く御礼申し上げます。本年が皆様にとってより良い年、より豊かな年となることを願っております。 さて、今年も期待と興奮のうちに新年の抱負を述べさせていただきます。

Ever heard someone say, “Tokyo has lacked master planning”?
That is a false statement or assumption. A more apt aphorism is perhaps “Tokyo lacks master planning.”
Meaning today… Meanwhile, I venture to say, let us imagine that the original spiraling diagram of the city is exerting effects and affectations to the present…

「東京にはマスタープランがなかった」と誰かが言っているのを聞いたことがあるだろうか。
それは間違いだ。より適切なアフォリズムは、"Tokyo lacks master planning"（東京にはマスタープランがない）だろう。つまりは現在進行形なのである… 一方で、あえて言えば、当初の都市のスパイラル図が、現在に至るまで影響や作用を及ぼしていることを想像してみよう。

As destabilizing as it may be to take the idea of organicism, and the critique thereof, out of its "traditional" home in European modernity, and bring it into the forefront of the contemporary world, a new body of knowledge, or perhaps a framework for a practice may be excavated by different perspectives buried in the global world. This is a reportage from a stranger living in a strange land; an American living in a far-east island nation, that is Japan.

「有機──オーガニック」という概念とその批評を、ヨーロッパ近代という「伝統的な」故郷から持ち出し、現代世界の最前線に持ち込むことが不安定なように、グローバルな世界に埋もれた異なる視点によって、新しい知識群、あるいは実践のための枠組みが掘り起こされるかもしれない。これは、見知らぬ土地に住む見知らぬ人、極東の島国日本に住むアメリカ人によるルポルタージュである。

The aesthetics of convenience and the ascetics of inconvenience collide inevitably when we speak of architecture and sustainability – whether we are talking about air conditioning, adaptive reuse versus new construction, or material selection and the use of virgin-origin versus recycled materials or the industry’s heavy use of plastics or other carbon-intensive materials.

建築と持続可能性について語るとき、利便性の美学と不便さの禁欲主義が必然的に衝突します。空調の話であれ、再利用と新築の比較であれ、材料の選択とバージン材とリサイクル材の使用、プラスチックやその他の炭素集約型材料の大量使用について語るときであれ。

不便さを肌で感じる今日この頃。考えるに、不便さは、サステナビリティの新しい様式となりうるだけでなく、人類が自然と再びつながることができる方法かと思うときがあります。「風流」という言葉は文字通り、かつての公家の邸宅が老朽化し、穴のあいた壁や障子から風が吹き抜けることを究極の美学と転化したものです。都というステータスに固執した貴族たちは、この「風流」を優雅さ、味わい、洗練されたものへと昇華させ、老朽化をまったく新しい美意識へと変換させることに成功したのです。なんと後天的な嗜好でしょうか。

There is a case to be made for the notion of inconvenience, not only because it can be a new modality of sustainability, but also because it is a way humanity can reconnect with nature. The Japanese sentiment of fūryū literally means “wind flowing through” and it was an ultimate aestheticization of formerly grand complexes of nobility that became so decrepit that wind would blow through porous walls and hole-ridden shoji panels. However, the habit bound nobility that clung to the imperial, but inglorious, capital, exacted a kind of reframing, positive transformation of decrepitness into an altogether new sense of aesthetics by elevating the fūryū to mean elegance, taste, sober refinement.

栄養消費という生産的で持続可能な里山の原型は、美的消費のため徹底的に解体され再構築された形となって我々の眼前に広がります。その消化はソーシャルメディアの普及によってより強力に加速しました。まさに現代を顕著に結晶化した現象空間です。「自然を破壊するのではなく、自然を改善する」と宣言するやいなや、その宣言もまた、驚くべき商品化行為であることに気づくのです。

Evading all pretensions and aggrandizing narratives, the Water Garden is a pleasant garden to visit. It is most apt for human consumption and meditation or self-absorption. The productive, sustainable satoyama of nutritional consumption has been thoroughly deposed by the consumption of aesthetics; a fact that has been made all the more potent by the pervasiveness of social media. It is truly of our time. No sooner do we claim to improve nature rather than damaging it, than we realize that this declaration too is a remarkable act of commodification.

れらの相互作用は、長い時間をかけた一貫性のある丁寧な作業によって、生産性、共生、意味を獲得するものであり、水田も牧草地も里山のプロセスや哲学の範疇に含まれているのです。《水庭》は、こうした背景を引用しながらも、その目的はあくまでも美的なものであり、里山体系が持つ固有の生産的な記憶とは一線を画しているのです。

These interactions attain productivity, symbiosis and meaning over long periods of time through consistent and meticulous labor, bringing both paddy fields and pasture meadows well within the category of the satoyama process and philosophy. While the Water Garden draws on these references, it is singularly aesthetic in purpose, departing from the productive memory of the bespoke landscape.

これは、私たち自身の永遠の、内部的なビッグマック指数なのです。他の職業と同等になるには、そう、日本のような国が他の国と同等になろうとするのと同じように、困難で微妙なものになるのでしょう。傲慢になる必要はありませんが、自分たちの仕事、自分たちが世界に提供している価値について自覚し、無力感という自己憐憫を捨てなければならないのです。そうでなければ、私たちの職業は新しい才能を惹きつけることができず、一種の頭脳流出が起こってしまうでしょう。そのためには、ビックマック指数を変えなければならないのです。

But what does that say about our profession in general? What does that say about our country? Moreover, what does that say about our civilization as a whole? Remember that, in the US, the highest paid recent college graduates from computer engineering programs can earn up to $74,000 annually? At $44,409, average salary for an entry level architect, the discrepancy is 60%. This is our own eternal, internal Big Mac Index. The only way we can reach parity with other professions is going to be as challenging and tenuous as, yes, a country like Japan attempting to reach parity with other nations. No need for hubris, certainly, but we have to be mindful of what we do, of the value we provide the world, and shed the self-pitying sense of impotence. Or else our profession will not attract new talents, and hence undergo a kind of brain-drain. Let’s change our Big Mac Index.
