The new year has brought about calmness and introspection, hopefully before the perfect storm. While we are inundated daily with images and talks of simulated realities, artificial sentience (yes exaggerated), polarized provocations, staged theatrics…what has become more and more critical and important for us recently is the thought of being “real”.

一方で新年は、嵐の前のような静けさと内省の時間が流れています。 我々は昨今、仮想現実や人工的存在（過剰表現です）そして極端な挑発や誇張された演出などの映像や文言に日々晒されてますが、だからこそ“本物・まこと・リアル”であることがますます重要だと考えるようになりました。

先年に続きB01では、「ワーケーション」という名目のもと、各メンバーがそれぞれ選んだ場所に旅立ちます。ニュースレターでは、各々が訪れた場所をたどり、何を学び、何を発見したかを皆さんとシェアしていきます。日々の活動やありふれた日常から外れることで発見できる異なる視点、新しい世界観、魅力的な人々や場所、人生の気付きに出会うことが可能になると思います。そのひとつの例として、B01は寄留の所要を重要視します。これが毎年の恒例行事となり、私たち一人ひとりがより健全で視野の広い人間になり、B01が手がけるプロジェクトに貴重な洞察と経験をもたらしてくれることを願っています。トップバッターは、ポルトガルでワーケーションしたキャズです。

Continuing from last year, each team member plans to take a sojourn in the guise of “workation” to various places, and this newsletter will be occasionally tracing where each has visited, what was learned, and sharing discoveries. Other than the day-to-day activities, taking a sojourn outside of one’s comfort zone and routine is one such instance that allows us to discover different perspectives, discover new worlds, and encounter fascinating people, places, and epiphanies of life. We hope this becomes a tradition of sorts that makes each of us more wholesome and worldly to bring valuable insights and experiences to the projects we undertake. The top-batter was Kaz, who “workation”ed in Portugal.

現在進行中の気候危機を考えると、世界の未来や自然界について私たちが議論するとき、皮肉や悲観的になりがちだ。 この「みどりの日」に、私たち建築家は、人類の滅亡（あるいはより長い休暇）について憶測するのではなく、より良い、より緑豊かな未来を想像し、デザインする方法について真剣に考えることが必要とされているのではないか。

It is easy to become cynical or complacent when discussing the future of our natural and constructed world, given the on-going climate crisis. As the American Indigenous queer poet Demian DinéYazhi’ notes of the Euro-Western “romanticization and addiction with apocalypse,” it is hard to imagine better alternate futures when you accept catastrophe as a given. This Greenery Day, rather than speculating about our own demise (or a longer vacation), we architects can reflect on how we can imagine and design better, greener futures.

Beginning April 1st, I will take on a new position as an Associate Professor-in-Practice at Japan Women’s University (aka JWU).
April Fools joke? … It is happening, and what a prospect it will be.
B01 will be for practice and KazLab will be for research, together engendering a reciprocal platform that can be mobilized by these two wheels. I look forward to this prospect and challenge.

4月1日より、私は日本女子大学(英通称=JWU)の特任准教授として新たな職務に就くことになりました。
エイプリル・フール？という冗談はさておき、いよいよ始まります。
B01は実践の場、KazLabは実験の場として、この両輪でまわることによる相乗効果を期待しています。この展望と挑戦を楽しみにしています。

本年も皆様のご支援とご協力を賜り、厚く御礼申し上げます。本年が皆様にとってより良い年、より豊かな年となることを願っております。さて、今年も期待と興奮が解けぬうちに新年の抱負を述べさせていただきます。

For me, the “workation” sojourn marked the end to a long hiatus of international travels upended by the Covid pandemic. The decision to go to Vietnam was quite simple as I’ve never been there. It was always high up on my list of places to visit, for its complex history, cuisine, and vibrant culture. While there were usual options of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, it was finally settled with Danang as a destination for several reasons. As a bonafide city boy, I knew being in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City would be quite distracting with monuments, museums, lively communities, bustling restaurants, and markets. As far as sojourn goes, and not to forget the “workation” aspect of it, one does need some down-time to reflect, relax, and of course, work in this case. I thought Danang would be perfect since there would only be pools and beaches, and usually I get bored of those quite quickly. Was I ever wrong…

生粋のシティーボーイである私は、首都ハノイや経済の中心地ホーチミンにいると、モニュメントや博物館、活気あるコミュニティ、賑やかなレストラン、市場などでかなり注意が散漫してしまうだろうと思いました。また、「ワーケーション」としての側面も忘れてはいけません。ダナンにはプールとビーチしかないから、すぐ飽きて仕事に集中できるから完璧だと思っていました。後々とんでもない勘違いだったと気付くのですが…

どこか日常ではない場所に行く、滞在する言葉として、旅行、出張、駐在、帰省、留学があります。それぞれの言葉には輪郭があり、何をするか共通認識を持っています。新しい造語であるワーケーションとなった途端、どこで何をすることなのか、私にとっての輪郭はぼんやりとしていました。旅行よりは制約があり、出張よりは自由。自分にとってのワーケーションを計画することは、普段の東京での仕事環境、食生活、オンオフの切り替えとは違う組み立て方を試せ、同時に向き合う機会でした。

Various words that describe the act of going somewhere out of the ordinary, and staying there, all have a clear outline and common meaning; from "traveling," "business trip," "long stays," “homecoming," to "study abroad." As soon as it became a workation, the outlines of where and what I would be doing were blurred for me...

No matter how much digital technology has advanced, it is always better to visit a place, experience it, and feel its atmosphere. Through this trip, Ken was positively reminded and encouraged by the fact that design is widely involved in certain things, and that we are engaged in a profession where the meaning of design is questioned and challenged on a daily basis.

どんなにデジタルが発達しても、その場所に赴き、体験、空気を感じること、百聞は一見にしかずとは良く言ったものです。今回の旅を通して、ある物事に広くデザインが介入していること、そして日々その意味を我々は問い、また問われている職業に従事しているという事実にポジティブに気付かされ、勇気をもらいました。
